Covid19 - Dentist Visits
It’s not fun to visit the dentist at the best of times but even worse when it’s in the middle of a pandemic. The boys were supposed to have their braces adjusted the day after lockdown commenced back in March, and Max had a wire break on day 3 of lockdown, so a dentist visit was high on the list of things to get done when any easing of lockdown occurred. Along with hair cuts……
I also had my bottom wire (inside my front teeth) come away and need repairing, along with my nightly mouth guard needing replacement, due to me grinding my teeth so badly with the current anxiety that I have chewed right through the plastic!!
I am not sure I am going to be able to describe the 'crazy' that was our trip to the dentist - but here goes. The dentist is only taking one appointment at a time, and no one else is allowed in the surgery with you. They also told me that they are picking and choosing who they see based on how much they can trust them to follow the rules and to be low risk. So lucky us as we obviously met the necessary criteria !! Masks are compulsory until you are in the chair and there is no air conditioning running, so it is DAMN hot! You have to disinfect your feet - yes, your feet, before entering the surgery. External shoes are not allowed in medical premises in India but spraying my feet with some homemade disinfectant and then trying not to slip over on the polished tiled floor was definitely interesting.
Then you have to sanitise your hands with some medical grade gel that stings and stinks !! Then you have your temperature taken and if all is good, you can proceed to the sofa and wait for the dentist.
Our dentist is American trained and lovely and usually it’s nice to catch up and hear all about her family and holidays but in these crazy times it’s all about heath risks etc. She seemed so stressed by all the precautions that they need to follow and the hazmat suits and plastic shield masks they are wearing are so hot and uncomfortable - I really don't know how they do it. I was instructed to then go to the bathroom and wash my hands with medical grade soap for 30 seconds and then had to rinse my mouth with a strong mouthwash that was disgusting for 1 minute.
Finally, a quick 30 minute treatment and I was back out on the streets with my mask on. Let's hope that is the last medical visit in our time in India.
