Australia Day in Bangalore

Living overseas on a national holiday brings some mixed emotions - you want to be home and celebrating with family and friends but you also have the chance to show other nationalities some fabulous 'Australianisms'. Backyard cricket, a brilliant bbq, teach some good old Australian slang…… the list goes on.

There are debates on whether the 26th January is an appropriate day to ‘celebrate Australia’, and I am not going to discuss that hot potato here. All I want to say, as an Aussie living overseas, is that I love having a day to celebrate and show off our fabulous country.  So, as long as there 'is' a day to celebrate, I am not concerned on the actual date.

As it so happens, the 26th January is also Indian Republic Day.  So, celebrating in Bangalore is always fun, as the locals are also having a relaxing day and have loads of Indian decorations available.  This year was the 70th Republic Day celebration for India, so quite a lot of fanfare.

We have made a bit of a thing about putting on a big BBQ on the 26th January whilst we’re away.  We decorate the house, we make all the necessary foods and this year we even dressed for the occasion.  I had a jacket and a dress made for us, in the style of the Australian Flag, before we left Hong Kong -  quick trip to Shenzhen and you can get anything made !!  We were quite the couple.  Sadly there weren't a lot of photos taken - we were all having too much fun, so I apologise for the lack of people shots.  We had a fabulous bbq, a couple of pavlovas and lamingtons, and even shared a packet of Allens Party Mix.

The crowd of 27 at our villa only consisted of 3 Australian families (including us) but the remaining English, Scots, Germans, and Kiwi friends joined in the fun and didn't even complain about all the Australian music that was on high rotation……  well not to me anyway.

Happy Australia Day everyone !
