Top of the list - the Indian list !!

This week Mercer released the annual data on the 'Quality of Living Rankings for 2018' for cities across the world.  Mercer complete this list every year and Vienna topped the list this year.  The survey is used by many companies to determine the best places for staff to be located across the globe, what compensation should be for living in certain places, and where to set up new business units.

The top ten cities globally for 2018:
  1. Vienna
  2. Zurich
  3. Auckland
  4. Munich
  5. Vancouver
  6. Dusseldorf
  7. Frankfurt
  8. Geneva
  9. Copenhagen
  10. Sydney
The results put Sydney at 10, Hong Kong at 71 in the world, and Hyderabad at 142.  However, 142 puts Hyderabad as the most liveable city in India !!  Lucky us.

Hyderabad is equal with Pune, and, as a comparison, Bangalore comes in at 149th globally.  The review looks at 450 cities across the world, and assesses the living conditions in each city.  There are 39 factors that are analysed which are broken down in to 10 categories:

  • Political and social environment - looking at political stability, crime levels, regional relationships, laws etc
  • Economic environment - currency stability, banking and financial options
  • Socio-cultural environment - media availability and censorship, personal freedom
  • Medical and Health - medical services, pollution levels, sanitation, infectious diseases
  • Schools and Education - availability and diversity of international schools
  • Public Services and Transportation - Water, Public Transportation, Traffic issues
  • Recreation - Theatres, sports grounds, restaurants, entertainment facilities
  • Consumer Goods - Availability of international food items, cars, technology, clothing etc
  • Housing - Availability and standard of rental housing, appliances, furniture and maintenance
  • Natural Environment - Climate, risks of natural disasters etc

Apparently the things that push Hyderabad to the top of the Indian list is the weather...... well we will see about that given that it is not even summer yet, and each day is 37-40 degrees. However, I will be grateful for the lower humidity, that is for sure.  The other characteristic that pushes it higher is the apperant low crime rate - happy to hear that too !!

Most of the Indian cities have made substantial jumps over the years with increased infrastructure and improved access to sustainable food options pushing them higher in the ranks.  However, the introduction of specific sanitation and waste removal scores could impact some Indian cities negatively.  Hyderabad only came in at 209 in this area.  Lets hope India continues to grow and improve in liveability in the coming years.
