Stories of Lockdown in India

There are some Covid-19 stories that are only possible to come from India.  There have been 3 this week that I just couldn't not share with you.

Man v Snake
Here in the state of Karnataka, where we live, there was an easing of some of the lockdown restrictions this week, although not many really impacted us. However, one that did, and was very popular among most in lockdown, was the sale of liquor was allowed.  This, of course, was welcomed by many, none more than the thousands of out of work Indian men.  The queues on Monday were crazy at most liquor stands or stores, the queues were hundreds long.  Mike drove by a handful of places looking to buy beer and in the end, gave up, and sent our driver to stand in the queue !!
With the sale of liquor allowed, many men had a big night on Monday and on Tuesday there was a story of man on his way home from a bender and he came across a rat snake while riding his motor bike.  For some reason this offended him, so he stopped, captured the snake and proceeded to bit it - actually I'm not sure 'biting it' is a good enough description - he 'mauled' it.  He was then arrested and spent the night in jail……… only in India !!!  Here is a video of this idiot just so you really get to understand the crazy…..

Man v Train
As has been widely reported in the news, there are millions of stranded 'migrant' workers throughout India. Most of these men are labourers who move around the country looking for work wherever it is.  This meant, that when PM Modi suddenly informed the lockdown in March, these people were stranded in other states, unable to get home and with no work or place to live.  Many thousands of these people have tried to make their way back to their home states, but due to the shutting of state borders, are 'stuck'.  Again, some restrictions eased this week and many tried again to find their way home but there is no public transport for them to use.  I am not sure why, as this is the not the first story of this nature, but these migrants seem to think that lying on the railway tracks is the best place to sleep.  So, on Friday there were 14 migrant men killed in the north of India when they were hit by a train at 5.30 in the morning while they slept on the train tracks.  I really have no words - just lots of questions !!!

Man v Brother
Finally, another story from here in Kanartaka where two brothers were playing a board game on Thursday evening while sharing a 'few' drinks (another story related to the new opening of the liquor stores).  The brothers made a bet that whoever won was to be paid 500 rupees ($10 AUD) by the other.  Of course, at the end of the game, the losing brother refused to pay up.  The younger of the brothers was not happy and hit is brother (not sure what with) and the brother fell unconscious and later died.  The moral of this story?  Board games are dangerous when you are in lockdown - stick to eating snakes and playing chicken on train tracks !!

Goodbye for now - and as Mike keeps reminding me "this is all still sh@t "!
