Hyderabad Boulders - Khajaguda Rock Park
Our final adventure in Hyderabad was a hike around the very commonly seen rock boulders. Hyderabad is very well known for its skylines of rocky outcrops, boulders and hillsides which are sadly being destroyed by the extensive growth of the city. The constant blasting of these boulders amd rocks for building developments is ever present - even outside our sleepy community of Open Skies. There is a residential project under construction there and the blasting of rocks shakes our house all day every day as they use explosives to clear the site.
Not only are they being destroyed for urbanisation but also they are damaged with graffiti and constant pollution. The park we visited is called Khajaguda Rock Park, located only 15 minutes from the hub of Gachibowli, and it was horribly littered and vandalised. Broken glass, rubbish and graffiti were seen everywhere as we climbed over the hills and rocks.
Geologists say that many of these rock formations are over 2500 million years old - making them the true Hyderabad history set in granite. It’s so sad that they are likely to be destroyed in the near future.
Even still, the boys and I had a lovely time boulder hopping and enjoying the views over the city. The rocks are truely amazing and defy gravity with some of there balancing acts. We miss our hikes in Hong Kong, so this morning of rock climbing was a lovely reminder of our time spent hiking.
I love that different parts of India look so different. I haven’t seen another Indian city that looks like Hyderabad - the boulders are very unique. Hyderabad is the only place in India that the rocks are supposed to be protected, however urban growth always seems to win out in the end.
