The Security Warning You DON'T Want to Receive

Recently I received the following email from the Australian government:

"India travel advice"

This travel advice has been reviewed and includes new information on entry and exit. We haven’t changed our level of our advice - ‘Exercise a high degree of caution’ in India overall. Higher levels apply in some parts of the country."

I didn't really take much notice of the email, as these come and go often when you live in countries like India.  However, on further analysis it appears that this warning is for general caution throughout India but a heightened warning for certain areas.  One of those areas is along the Pakistan border in the north.  As it happens, Max and I are going there for a long weekend in the middle of January.  Not exactly the news you want to read while planning a trip !

I have now done some further analysis and research on it and it seems the city we are visiting 'Amritsar' and the border crossing we will visit - the Attari/Wagah crossing is not at high risk and we should be ok.  We are visiting Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple and the Pakistan Border crossing and see both countries complete the changing of the guard.  We also want to visit Jallianwala Bagh which is the site of the famous British massacre of Indian Punjabi celebrators in 1919 and go out in the local villages and see Indian farming in action. Should be great.

We are not going to change our plans for that weekend, but I promise to be mindful of the issues that could arise and will be safe.  And I will register with the Australian Government noting our travel arrangements - just in case.  Bring on another Indian adventure :)

I have highlighted where Max and I are travelling next week !!
